Real Estate Career Frequently Asked Questions
How do I get a real estate Broker-Associate license?
Indiana Real Estate Licensing requires that you are 18 years of age and have a high school diploma or its equivalent. You must complete a 90-hour real estate Broker pre-licensing class at an approved Indiana real estate school and pass the state examination. Carpenter offers both live and online prelicensing classes.
How do I take the pre-license course?
You can take the Broker pre-license course at an approved school in a classroom setting or online. When you successfully complete the course, you will take the required state exam. When you pass the state exam you’ll be issued a brokers license. You then must affiliate with a Managing Broker (typically a real estate company) who will actually hold your license.
How long is the course?
In a classroom setting it can be approximately three to eight weeks depending on whether you take day or evening classes. Online, the pace is set by the student. All are 90-hour courses.
How do I choose a brokerage firm?
It is important for you to choose a brokerage firm that meets your expectations in terms of exceptional training, leading technology and marketing, professional office support and top notch reputation in the marketplace. What will it cost me to get started?
Costs include the Broker pre-licensing course, exam fees and state licensing fees. You will also need to become a member of the Metropolitan Indianapolis Board of Realtors (MIBOR). We tell new agents to have at least six months of expenses in reserve as it may take a few months to get your business going. We can discuss these anticipated costs when you visit with Carpenter Realtors.
How soon can I expect to generate income?
The exciting thing about a career in real estate is that you are limited only by your own efforts. Some new agents are selling homes in the first couple of months while others may take a little longer to get their client base established – it depends on you.
What is required to be successful in real estate?
Dedication, hard work and a great attitude! The most successful agents are also highly motivated and outgoing. A comprehensive training program such as Carpenter’s Career Start program provides a solid foundation on which to build your career.
Is it important to be technologically savvy?
To be successful in today’s competitive marketplace, it is vital to utilize the technology tools that are available to be more productive and efficient. You do not need to be a computer geek but you do need to be willing to learn.
What type of equipment will I need to get started?
When interviewing with Brokers, determine what is available to you in their office environment. Also, note that smartphones, tablets and laptop computers are all essential tools of leading agents today. Consider these items when planning your budget.
What can I expect to make in my first year? Second? Third?
A career in the real estate industry offers the benefits and advantages of running your own business. You decide how many hours you want to work and how much money you want to make. The best part is that your earning potential is unlimited! No one determines your salary or your raises other than you. At Carpenter Realtors, our new agents achieve sales of $2 million, $3 million or even $4 million in their “rookie” year.
